Therapy FAQs | Fees, Coverage & What to Expect at Reflecting Room Counselling
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or want support in making changes in your life, therapy can help. You don’t need to have a crisis to benefit — therapy is for anyone looking to better understand themselves and their patterns.
Is what I share in therapy confidential?
Yes. Everything you share in therapy is private and confidential. The only exceptions are when we are legally or ethically required to break confidentiality to keep you or someone else safe (such as risk of harm to self/others, child abuse, or court orders).
What happens if I need to cancel or reschedule an appointment?
Life happens! If you need to cancel your appointment, please let us know by email or text with at least 24 hours’ notice. While we understand that emergencies and unexpected illnesses may come up, last-minute cancellations without rescheduling may be subject to a fee of half the session rate. If three sessions are missed in a row without notice, we may need to pause therapy until you’re ready to re-engage more consistently.
How often should I come to therapy?
I typically recommend starting therapy on a weekly or biweekly basis so we can build momentum and see progress more consistently. As you begin to feel more confident managing things on your own, we can gradually space sessions out—moving to every three weeks or even monthly for ongoing support. This way, therapy is flexible and adapts to your needs over time.
What can I expect from my first session?
In your first session, we will discuss any specific challenges you’re facing. We will review your history, previous diagnoses, your home life, work, social connections, and relationships to understand how the different areas of your life contribute to your wellbeing. Together, we’ll clarify your goals for therapy and outline next steps in the treatment plan.
How do copays work?
If your insurance plan doesn’t cover the full session fee, you’ll be responsible for the remaining balance, or copay. You can pay this amount through the online booking portal, or request that we process the extra amount via your credit card on file.
How do I prepare for my virtual session?
Virtual sessions are available through Jane App. You can join from your phone by downloading the app, or via a browser — Chrome works best. You’ll receive an email with a link to join the session at the scheduled time. Before joining, make sure you are in a quiet, private space with a stable internet connection, and check that your camera and microphone are working. It’s a good idea to click the link a few minutes early to ensure everything is set up and ready to go.
Do you offer sliding scale fees or reduced rates?
Yes, I offer sliding scale pricing starting at $100 per session for students or clients with financial need. Please reach out to discuss your situation — I’m happy to find an option that helps make therapy accessible while supporting your ongoing care.
Do you offer direct billing?
We now offer direct billing through TELUS eClaims, which means that for many insurance providers, we can submit your session fees directly to your insurer, and you may only be responsible for any portion not covered by your plan. If your plan is not supported for direct billing, we continue to offer our standard indirect billing option, where you pay upfront and submit your receipt to your insurance provider for reimbursement.
What are your fees?
Our fees are based on therapist qualifications and experience. Standard 50-minute sessions are $150, 30-minute check-in sessions are $85, and extended 75-minute sessions are $190. We’ll always review fees before or during your first appointment so there are no surprises.
How long does therapy typically take?
It varies. Some clients come for just a few sessions to work on a specific issue, while others engage in longer-term therapy for deeper personal growth. We’ll revisit your goals along the way to make sure therapy continues to meet your needs.
How long are therapy sessions?
I offer different session lengths to fit your needs. Most clients choose the standard 50-minute session, as it provides enough time to explore concerns and make progress at a steady pace. For those who feel they’ve reached a place where therapy is more about maintenance, I also offer 30-minute check-ins to touch base or work through a specific situation. On the other hand, if you prefer more time to go deeper, reflect, or cover multiple areas, 75-minute extended sessions are available.
How do I know if my insurance plan covers psychotherapy?
You can contact your insurance provider directly to ask about coverage for a Registered Psychotherapist, including session limits, coverage percentage, and whether direct billing is supported. For some insurers listed under TELUS Health, I can also perform an eligibility check on your behalf with your consent. Please reach out to ask if your insurance company is included in the list of providers who allow eligibility checks. We will need you to provide certain information beforehand in order to run a check.
How do I know if my insurance plan covers psychotherapy?
In-person sessions are available on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 AM to 7 PM. The office is located on the second floor of the Adrenaline MMA building. Please note that we do not have access to the front entrance. You must enter through the back door. Please send a quick text when you arrive, and I will come down to let you in for your appointment time. There is free parking in a large lot behind the building, and a coffee shop next door if you’d like a drink before your session.
Do you provide resources or exercises between sessions?
It depends on the type of therapy we’re doing. If we’re working on coping skills or grounding techniques, I often create a personalized file with resources and tools for you to keep. I may also share psychoeducation materials that relate to your experiences. While I don’t usually assign formal homework, I may invite you to reflect or stay mindful of certain patterns between sessions to help you make meaningful connections in your life.
